ASME B16.36 Orifice Plate Flanges

ASME Orifice Plate Flanges are specialized flanges designed for differential pressure flow measurement systems in industrial pipelines. Compared with standard ASME B16.5 flanges, orifice flanges include pressure tap holes and jack screws for easy installation and maintenance of orifice plates.

These flanges are widely used in oil & gas, petrochemical, LNG, refinery, power generation, and chemical processing industries where accurate flow measurement is required.

Our ASME B16.36 orifice flanges are available in Stainless Steel, Duplex Stainless Steel, Super Duplex, and Nickel Alloy materials including ASTM A182 F304, F316L, F51, F53, Inconel 625, Monel, and Hastelloy.

Available pressure ratings include Class 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 with RF and RTJ facing types.

Flat Face (FF)

Flat Face (FF)

For connection to cast iron or non-metallic equipment

Raised Face (RF)

Raised Face (RF)

Standard for orifice flanges; most common in oil & gas and chemical service

Analysis of Flange Sealing Surface Treatment

Face Finish:

  • 125–250 AARH: Standard stock finish for raised face flanges
  • 63 AARH: Smooth finish for cold water and low-pressure service
  • 32 AARH: Available on request for critical sealing applications

Installation Note: When installing orifice flanges, both pressure taps must be at the same elevation. Taps should never be installed facing downward - debris accumulation will block the tap and cause inaccurate readings.

Product Advantages

🔧

Forged, Not Cast

All orifice flanges forged from certified round steel billets - higher density, fewer internal defects, better pressure integrity

🎯

In-House Tap Drilling

Pressure taps and jack screw holes machined on dedicated CNC equipment - tap position and thread quality verified against B16.36 requirements

🔬

PMI Testing

Every heat verified by in-house spectrometer before production and again on finished flanges - eliminates material mix-up risk

FAQ

Q: Why is there no Class 150 orifice flange?

A: ASME B16.36 does not provide dimensions for Class 150 orifice flanges. Class 150 flanges are too thin at the base to accommodate the drilling required for pressure taps while maintaining adequate material strength and thread integrity. If your system operates at Class 150 pressure, the standard solution is to specify a Class 300 orifice flange pair - which is dimensionally heavier but fully acceptable from a pressure standpoint.

Q: What is the purpose of jack screws on orifice flanges?

A:Jack screws are threaded studs built into the flange base - one per flange, positioned 180° apart. They allow you to spread the two mated flanges apart for orifice plate removal, inspection, and replacement without cutting or disturbing the pipeline. Before using jack screws, the line must be fully depressurized. Jack screws are not structural members - they do not replace flange bolts.

Q: What is the difference between flange taps and corner taps?

A: Flange taps are the standard configuration under ASME B16.36 - pressure connections located 1 inch upstream and 1 inch downstream from the flange face. Corner taps position the pressure connections directly at the orifice plate face, between the plate and the flange. Corner taps generally provide better accuracy for small-bore pipes and fluids with stable flow profiles. Flange taps are easier to install and maintain and are the default for most industrial applications.

Q: What material should I specify for orifice plate flanges?

A: For general service (water, steam, non-corrosive fluids), carbon steel ASTM A105 is the standard choice. For corrosive or chemical service, specify A182 F316L. For low-temperature service below -29°C, specify A350 LF2. The orifice plate material should match or be compatible with the flange material - 316L is the most common plate material in process plants due to its hardness and corrosion resistance.

Q: Can orifice flanges be supplied with RTJ facing?

A: Yes. RTJ (Ring Type Joint) facing is available for Class 600 and above. RTJ orifice flanges require a matching RTJ ring gasket and are preferred in high-pressure, high-temperature service where a metal-to-metal seal is required. Please specify RTJ when ordering as it affects the flange facing machining and gasket selection.
